EDUCATION IN MALAYSIA | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
Malaysia education especially Institute of Higher Learning has considerable amount of quality to produce professionals that are essential to the workforce market today. Although Malaysia is suffering from economy downturn, Malaysian education seems to have taken a another major leap towards better education and the introduction of 3+0 format where students can finish their degree locally in private colleges is a welcome news.The Ministry of Education have approve the proposal but to date (3rd April 1998) not even one colleges had given the authority to conduct the courses. However, advertisements on this matter from private colleges are already up in the newspaper to pull more students in to their colleges.On my viewpoint, the 3+0 format is a good approach to encourage student to study locally. The ministry should have approve those qualify private colleges to conduct these courses. There are many situation where non bumiputra students that score good result in SPM but fail to get a place at the government Institute of Higher Learning. This situation occurs because that they not only have to compete with the better non-bumis applicant but must also compete with the bumiputra (better and poorer) student for an education place. Of course, bumiputra student have priority than non-bumis even thought their results are far worse.There is a case where an Indian student scored 7As with aggregate 8 in SPM examination but fail to get a place in UPU application of Institute of Higher Learning. Another student, which is Malay, scored 4As with aggregate 15 in SPM and get a top rated university in Malaysia.This means that non-bumis have to take up STPM to get into local U.Although private university is available in Malaysia now, they cost a lot more than other type of Institute of Higher Learning. One semester for example cost about RM 5000. Maybe scholarship can help the poor Indian student mention above to get into the private U, however chances are slim as more fund are prepare for the bumiputra students.Therefore, 3+0 courses is an alternative for students to get a university (foreign) degree locally aside from doing STPM. Its also place for non hoppers because of poor SPM result, to get their degree provided they are willing to give extra effort. As you can see today, private colleges offer their course at a much cheaper cost compare to few years back. Studying in private colleges last time cost parents approximately RM4000 to RM 7000 per semester. Today those colleges that have been offering courses at such a killing cost had already cut down their fees. However, getting a place in government Institute of Higher Learning is an advantage to anyone because of recognize qualification and wide job prospect. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||

Computer Programming | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
Computer programming is a complex job and although there are some people who mastering it and find it easy. It requires large knowledge of programming codes. To acquire this knowledge one must be able to practice often and do a lot of trial and error task in a specific programming language.Among programming language that available are: Ada Cobol Fortran C++ Visual Basic Pascal FoxPro J++My knowledge in programming language is not wide but I did some observation on these languages. Among those I found out is that Pascal and C language are almost similar. Some of the commands in Visual Basic especially the condition is the same with Visual FoxPro.I've tried Visual Basic (VB) recently without having any knowledge about it and find it extremely hard to understand what more to write a bunch of error free code to make it run. Compare to those languages I know, VB is very complicated and according to an article I read somewhere, VB is object oriented programming and is difficult for beginners to learn. Maybe I should purchase a book to learn from it rather than doing trial and error with without any proper knowledge of VB programming codes. A Visual Basic programming output (above), which is object oriented.My college lecturer once said before those programming languages have different type application. Among two common type is the business application and scientific application. Business application consists of RPG, FoxPro, Cobol, dBase and Natural Language. On scientific part, we have the C++, Ada, Fortran, Pascal and Visual Basic. Visual FoxPro program (above), which is business oriented, deal with RDBMSC++ is the most common language use today and Windows 95 is one example of C++ program. However J language is coming out from behind because its potential as an Internet base programming language. Although VB and Visual C++ have the similar capability, J language is preferred because of some of its Internet function such as Java Active-X.
